18 is that year you are finally considered an “adult.” 18 is that time in everyone’s life, where we are confused and anxious about what are lives hold in store for us. We are broke, exhausted, and unsure of whether to go to school, work for awhile, or travel. 18 is the year of experimenting, and I am just beginning this journey now.
18 Lessons I Learned in 18 Years:
1. It is your life, not your parents. Don’t let their temporary opinions dictate your long- term decisions.
2. Cross the limitations of your comfort zone- you will experience the best things.
3. Ask for help when you need it.
4. Pain is inevitable, you are going to hurt someone. Someone is going to hurt you. Don’t tip toe because you are scared to hurt or be hurt: express yourself fully.
5. Stop worrying and get the tattoo if you want it bad enough.
6. Boys, or girls, or whichever you prefer will come and go, never beg someone to stay if they want to go.
7. There is more to a person than their gender or sexuality.
8. If you are questioning if it was sexual assault, then it was probably sexual assault, and that is not okay.
9. Those guys calling you “bitch” for not reacting to their drunken harassment at 15 years old, are not the good guys. They are not worth a second of your thoughts. They are not worth a discontinued penny.
10. BE KIND ALWAYS.
11. A bad life is not an excuse to be a bad person.
12. Grilled cheese is best cooked over a fire. Grilled cheese is also best eaten around a fire with music echoing in the background.
13. There is still stigma surrounding medication for mental health. Only you know what’s best for you.
14. Years later, but mac and cheese and rice krispies are still the best comfort foods. (separate not together)
15. I’ve gone 18 years without salmonella: raw cookie dough will not give you salmonella.
16. Children make the world a brighter place.
17. Littering is not even a little bit cool: be kind to the planet.
18. Tell people you love them.
“A person’s a person, no matter how small.”
